random thought Thursday

I've recently learned that some of the very intelligent people in my life get everyday phrases confused. One of my college roommates (not Paige) always thought that "pigtails" were "pinktails" and I don't think she figured out she was wrong until college. One of my coworkers recently admitted a few of her confused phrases. She always thought a "jump ball" in basketball was a "junk ball" and that when a thought "dawned on you" she had always thought it "donged on you", like a bell. I think the reasoning behind her junk ball is the best. She always thought the ball was junk and that's why they threw it up in the air. The only one I can think of right now that confuses me is "butt naked" or is it "buck naked"? We had a discussion about this the other night and no one knew the correct answer.

So I've done some research on this topic, and I must admit I'm only slightly concerned that Google didn't auto-fill the field when I started typing. Does that mean I'm searching something that most people already know or don't care about? People probably just don't care. Which came first the "buck" or the "butt"? Well what I've found is that no one really knows. Some think "buck" came first because of buckskin and old slang, some threw out that maybe it's supposed to be "buff" (thanks I need more options), and others think "butt" came first because your butt is showing. Also people think butt was turned into buck because it's more polite to use in social settings. That's enough. Who cares? I'm going with butt naked. Just makes sense to me, and honestly if you're in a crowd that would be offended by the word butt then you shouldn't be hanging out with them anyway.

All of this research had led me to another issue. Is it "nip it in the bud" or "nip it in the butt"? Ahhh why is life so hard?
